Jane Reister Conard, J.D. is a health law consultant and mediator focusing on health law disputes. She was previously in-house counsel with Intermountain Healthcare, an integrated healthcare system in Utah and Idaho, for 26 years until her retirement in 2008. As a result of her experience providing legal counsel for various healthcare service lines, health professionals, regulatory and compliance issues, and business transactions within a large healthcare system and her observations of the challenges of integration and collaboration both internally and externally due to the dynamic nature of the healthcare industry, Ms. Conard subsequently developed her private practice in the areas of conflict management in healthcare facilities and settings, including facility management, medical staff, and board interactions; professional relationships and medical staff hearings; patient care and outcomes improvement; and other healthcare disputes. Highlights of her dispute resolution practice include:
*2008 – principal author of the Conflict Management Toolkit published by the American Health Lawyers Association in response to the Joint Commission standard requiring conflict management policies in accredited healthcare institutions
*2009 – co-presenter with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., of a seminar for in-house counsel on developing conflict management systems at the AHLA In-House Counsel Meeting
*2010 – co-author with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., of “Addressing the Art of Conflict Management in Healthcare in an Era of Healthcare Reform,” ABA Dispute Resolution Magazine, spring, 2010
*2011 – co-taught with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., “Advanced Mediation,” a two-day course for AHLA, followed by “Basic Mediation,” in 2012 with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., and Chris Stern Hyman, Esq.
*2012 – developed and presented with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., an on-site conflict management and leadership course for healthcare and medical staff executives
*2013 – co-presenter with Jeanne Franklin, Esq., of “Conflict Management for Medical Staff Services Leaders,” at the National Association for Medical Staff Services Annual Meeting
Ms. Conard received formal mediation training through the Utah Dispute Resolution Service, AHLA, and the International School of Business Mediation in Austria. She is a former American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) board member and former chair of the AHLA ADR Service Task Force. She was an adjunct professor and provided health law clinical internship experiences for many years for law students of the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah and is currently a mentor attorney for their Center on Law and the Biosciences.
Ms. Conard was a member and past president of the Salt Lake County Bar Association, the Utah Disability Law Center, and Women Lawyers of Utah, which selected her as the Utah Woman Lawyer of the year in 2006. She is a member of the state bars of California (inactive status), Utah, and Idaho. Ms. Conard received a B.A. degree magna cum laude with honors from Macalester College, an M.A. degree with published thesis from the University of Iowa, and a J.D. degree from the University of California, Davis, King Hall School of Law.
