Ancestry - Senior IP Counsel
Seeking an experienced IP attorney to join Ancestry as part of our dynamic and evolving legal team supporting both the family history and DNA businesses. This position can be based at Ancestry’s offices in Lehi, UT or San Francisco, CA. The attorney hired for this position will be accountable to provide best of class legal support across Ancestry’s various business activities, but with a key focus on intellectual property, patents and transactional work. The position will report to the Company’s Vice President and Associate General Counsel.
What You'll Do:
Manage internal team and external counsel focusing on maintaining and expanding patent portfolio
Draft and negotiate various types of agreements, including strategic relationships, and vendor and technology contracts.
Advise senior management on strategic management and development of Ancestry’s intellectual property portfolios
Lead internal IP counsel consisting of business stakeholders to determine actions to be taken on IP portfolio
Review proposed publications and conference materials to ensure IP protection is maintained
Advise business on legal issues related to IP, third party research projects, informed consent
Manage communication with third party IRB
Provide global legal support to the business as part of an integrated team of in-house attorneys as well as external law firms.
Who You Are:
Requirements for this role include a strong patent/IP transactional background and at least 6+ years’ experience at a dynamic in-house environment and/or a top law firm. Preferred candidates will have worked in both environments. Life sciences background or experience a plus.
J.D. with excellent academic credentials
3+ years experience in law firm setting working in patent strategy and prosecution
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, to take on big challenges and complex projects and to be accountable for results, while meeting demanding deadlines and balancing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Sound and practical business judgment and the ability to provide business oriented, practical legal advice. A problem-solving approach focused on achieving results that benefit our business as well as the business of our customers and partners
