ABOUT US
Rocky Mountain Innocence Center (RMIC) is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to correct and prevent the conviction of innocent people in Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Executive Director of RMIC serves as the organization’s chief executive officer/top-level executive and reports directly to its Board of Directors.
Guided by RMIC’s mission, vision, and values, and working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides strategic direction for RMIC. The Executive Director manages and oversees all aspects of the organization, including operations, casework, finances, personnel, development, programming, and community relations.
Crucial qualities in the Executive Director include excellent judgment, impeccable ethics, outstanding oral and written communication skills, flexibility, the ability to solve problems both autonomously and collaboratively, to work in a group as well as individually, to effectively handle multiple tasks with competing priorities, and to interact with a wide range of persons.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Oversight:
· Operational Management: Responsible for ensuring for effective, timely, and comprehensive identification of instances of possible wrongful convictions in Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming, overseeing research and investigation of cases, identification of counsel and support for representation; develops and maintains relationships with Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming area law schools and universities for student review of cases; develops and maintains relationships with Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming area legal communities, including law enforcement, public and private defense, relevant agencies, and the judiciary; monitors legal and political matters affecting wrongful convictions and develops Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming policies in collaboration with other relevant entities interested and experienced in policy work on these issues; and serves as chief spokesperson for RMIC.
· Fiscal Management: Develops the annual budget and oversees/manages RMIC’s finances; works with staff and other relevant entities to prepare quarterly financial reports for the Board; facilitates the annual audit; implements appropriate accounting policies and procedures; reviews and analyzes monthly financial reports and bank reconciliations; oversees facilities; and prepares Annua Report to the Innocence Network.
· Personnel Management: Effective staff management, including establishing and revising positions to meet changing needs; collaborating with staff to set program priorities; oversees recruitment, employment, and release of office personnel, including paid staff and volunteers; ensures sound human resource practices are in place for all personnel; maintains office policies and procedures and ensures staff and Board compliance; ensures maintenance of official records and documents; maintains proper wage and salary management, benefits, and accounting for staff time; and ensures efficient use of office equipment and IT.
Development:
· Responsible for establishment and executive of development strategy for RMIC; in conjunction with staff and Board, establishes and achieves development goals for donated and earned income; oversees events and individual giving, including working with development director, fundraisers, or fundraising consultants to achieve these goals.
· Responsible, in conjunction with staff and development director, fundraisers, or fundraising consultants, for effective identification of grant opportunities; oversees all grant applications and grants management.
· Maintains and enhances existing donor relationships, identifies and develops new funding sources in conjunction with development director, fundraisers, or fundraising consultants.
Other:
· Chief Staff Liaison to the Board in all RMIC matters; works collaboratively with the Board of Directors and its committees to develop and implement strategic direction of the organization; keeps Board fully informed of RMIC’s operations and condition.
· Promotes active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of RMIC’s work.
· Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments in the field of wrongful convictions, including relevant legal and scientific developments and ensuring that legal staff is provided such information.
· Responsible for overseeing and arranging the training and development of all staff attorneys, investigators, and/or paralegals to provide high-quality legal services.
· Ensure overall quality of legal work by editing and reviewing all filings in RMIC cases.
· Assign and monitor caseloads and case progress.
· Collaborate with Case Oversight Committee and other relevant stakeholders or partners on case selection.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Strong interest in innocence issues and working to prevent wrongful convictions.
· At least five years of management experience in a professional setting.
· J.D. required
· At least five years of litigation experience, civil or criminal.
· Experience with and understanding of budgeting and fiscal management.
· Understanding of non-profit organizations or experience in working with non-profit Boards of Directors.
· Experience or familiarity with the legal community in Utah preferred.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work as a team player while both leading the team and the organization.
· Ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining deadlines.
· Understanding of common computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and its applications.
· Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, make independent decisions, and to handle emergencies.
· Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

Salary range
$110,000 - $115,000 / year
LICENSING
Preferred bar licensing in at least one of the three states RMIC serves (Utah, Nevada, or Wyoming) or ability to motion/waive in.
