SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY - Summer Law Clerk
General Summary
Southern Utah University (SUU) is seeking an exceptional candidate for a summer law clerk intern,
working with the great team in the SUU Legal Office. The SUU Legal Office serves as in house counsel
for SUU.
SUU is a public university located in Cedar City, Utah, in close proximity to endless outdoors
opportunities. Southern Utah University is within a five-hour drive of more than 20 national parks and
monuments in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, so there is plenty of opportunity to explore the world at the
University of the Parks®. Plus, our hometown of Cedar City, Utah hosts events like the Tony-award
winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Utah Summer Games, music festivals, and downtown block
parties.
This position will report to the General Counsel. This opening for a 1L or 2L provides an opportunity for
the student to supplement their formal education with hands-on experience in higher education law--an
exciting area to be a part of!
The law clerk will be exposed to and contribute to real-world application and practical solutions in the
higher education legal environment. Higher education includes numerous areas of the law, such as
constitutional law, employment law, student conduct, contracts, risk management, intellectual property,
and privacy, among others. The law clerk will assist in these areas and on projects, such as reviewing
new and existing policies, research and write legal memoranda on pertinent topics, and other practical
projects where they will get to see the business and strategic impacts on legal issues.
Required Qualifications
• Enrolled at an ABA accredited law school;
• Completed first or second year of law school prior to the start of the internship;
• Student must intend to return to complete law school after the internship;
• Demonstrated ability to perform complex legal research and analysis; and
• Strong academic credentials and writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Proficiency with Westlaw;
• A strong desire to listen, learn and develop analytical, writing, and practical legal skills;
• Interest in higher education law, constitutional law, employment law, and/or policy review;
• Excellent listening, communication, and project management skills;
• Ability to multi-task in a face-paced environment; and
• Able to commit to required hours per week for the entire length of the internship.
