POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Office of the Clerk is currently accepting applications for a part-time (20 hours per week) position of Death Penalty Law Clerk. The incumbent will report to the Chief District Judge and will serve the entire Court in conducting procedural support, substantive review, research and writing on matters concerning capital habeas cases and other prisoner filed litigation. Employment is available immediately. This position it is funded by temporary emergency funds and continued employment is subject to availability of funds. This position is not subject to the four-year term maximum.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Independently conduct legal research and keep abreast with developments in the law regarding capital habeas cases in the Tenth Circuit Court and Supreme Court
• Draft memoranda of law on multiple issues, complex capital habeas cases
• Review voluminous state court records and trial transcripts
• Consult with judges regarding capital habeas issues and cases
• Assist with other prisoner filed litigation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
For consideration, applicants must be law school graduates with an exemplary academic record in addition to excellent research and writing skills. Candidates who possess at least one year of post graduate legal work experience in a high-volume, production-oriented work environment are preferred. Candidates who possess federal clerkship experience also are preferred.
The successful candidate must also be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, possess good judgment, maturity and tact; be dependable, responsible and maintain confidentially; be a proactive self- starter and demonstrate initiative in problem solving; be able to work quickly and harmoniously with others in a team-based environment; and present a poised, professional appearance and demeanor at all times. This position requires superb organizational, people and time management skills with the ability to juggle many changing priorities and demands at the same time. Computer assisted legal research and word processing ability are essential.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary for this position is a Judicial Salary Plan (JSP) 11-13, or $33,107 – $47,186 (half-time) based on qualifications and experience. The position falls within the Judicial Branch of the U.S. Government and the benefits include: health, dental, vision, life, long-term care, paid vacation and sick leave, FERS-FRAE retirement benefits, and tax deferred savings plan. This position is subject to mandatory direct deposit participation.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The Death Penalty Law Clerk is an excepted service position, serves at the pleasure of the court and is an 'at will' employee and can be terminated with or without cause. All judiciary employees are required to adhere to the Judicial Code of Conduct. Candidates must be United States citizens or be in the process of obtaining citizenship to work for the United States Courts.
