Hiring Range: $60,000.00 to $65,000.00/annually DOE

Job Description:

The CCS Immigration program offers high-quality immigration legal services to refugees, immigrants, and migrants in removal proceedings. The attorney in this position will be responsible for two distinct caseloads: 1) The attorney will support the Senior CCS Trial Attorney to represent Unaccompanied Refugee Minors ("URM") in the Refugee Foster Care program. The attorney will work to represent the minors before the USCIS and the Immigration Court. 2) The attorney will offer pro bono representation to asylum seekers and low-income migrants who face removal proceedings. The attorney who works in this position will be mentored and supervised by the Senior Immigration Trial attorney

Responsibilities include:

  1. Represent clients in Immigration Court. This representation will include motion practice and courtroom representation during the master and individual calendar hearings.

  2. Prepare and file affirmative and defensive asylum and other applications for immigration benefits.

  3. Work to increase the capacity of the immigration program by recruiting, training, and supervising law students and pro bono attorneys to help with the caseload.

  4. Create capacity within the pro bono non-immigration legal community to take on removal cases by recruiting, training, and supervising law students, paralegal students, and pro bono attorneys.

  5. Coordinate with the coalition of nonprofit immigration service providers who use a common hotline and referral service.

  6. Track and report on client outcomes to founders.

  7. Screen clients to determine eligibility for benefits and for CCS representation.

Work Environment - inside/outside, office, warehouse, noise, temperature, etc.

  1. This position is in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands - including bending, sitting, lifting, and driving

  1. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, carry 25 pounds, open filing cabinets, and bend, reach or stand as necessary

  7. Proficiency in English and Spanish oral and written communication.

  9. Proficiency in computer skills to maintain case files, complete documentation, scheduling and e-mail in GroupWise.

  10. Availability of an automobile with proof of current driver's license and auto insurance.

  11. Personal qualities of openness and respect for co-workers and clients, compassion, graciousness in helping clients to assess and to face their situations and to accept assistance.

  12. Commitment to mission of program and agency.

  13. Knowledge of community resources.

  14. Ability to evaluate and supervise staff.

  15. Ability to travel.

  16. Ability to communicate and work with others

Education, training, or experience:  

  1. Must have a law degree by June 30, 2022

  2. Spanish/English Bilingual

Background Screen/BCI requirement

  1. Must be able to pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

Licenses, certifications, and credentials

  1. Current Utah driver's license, proof of auto insurance with minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per occurrence, 21 years of age or older, a clean driving record, and ability to meet CCS vehicle safety requirements.

  2. Must be able to obtain a Law License within 6 months of date of hire (Utah License preferred).

Position status and expected schedule

  1. A flexible schedule is possible, but this position requires in-person/face-to-face work with clients (we are not able to accommodate applicants who can only work remotely).
