Job Description

Myriad is looking for an experienced attorney with a broad range of employment law expertise. Reporting to Associate General Counsel – Litigation , this position is responsible for providing general and employment specific legal advice as well as proactively and effectively managing a diverse range of pre-litigation matters and litigation matters (as needed) in a range of substantive areas and jurisdictions. In addition, this position requires expertise in managing outside counsel, including outside legal expenses.

Responsibilities

  • Advise Human Resources on a broad range of employment issues, including, but not limited to, recruiting, hiring, benefits, leave administration, progressive discipline, termination issues, federal and state statutory compliance, particularly Title VII, the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

  • Investigate and provide counsel on matters that may lead to litigation. Manage pre-litigation disputes while effectively minimizing risk

  • Draft and revise employment-related agreements, templates, policies, and procedures, such as leave policies, offer letters, insurance agreements, and more

  • Investigate and respond to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, audits, and other employment-related inquiries (e.g., EEOC, DOL, OSHA, and other state and federal agencies)

  • Provide training to company on substantive legal topics

  • Conduct internal audits, classification reviews, and support other compliance efforts to ensure compliance with the FLSA, the California Labor Code, and state laws around the country

  • Monitor important developments in employment law in jurisdictions across the country

Qualifications

  • Education & License: JD degree and bar admission in good standing required.

  • Experience: Minimum 5-7 years of experience in law firm or in-house legal position with strong background in HR, litigation, and legal research. Experience with California employment laws and/or judicial law clerk experience, preferred.

  • Healthcare, life science, or similar industry experience, preferred.

  • Strong legal research and writing skills.

  • Effective communicator with the ability to discern and explain complex concepts to non-lawyer, business partners.

  • Proven ability to evaluate risk in light of business and practical considerations and to make clear recommendations

  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to multitask, prioritize and manage own workload and work well under pressure.

  • Empathetic team player with excellent professional judgment and good sense of humor.

  • Understanding and adherence to legal ethics and ability to maintain confidentiality.
