In this role you will be responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to the People Group (HR team) and management on a broad range of employment and labor matters in a manner that is consistent with Savage values and goals set forth in its Vision and Legacy statement. The successful candidate will be a motivated, business-oriented legal professional with exceptional judgment who is customer-focused and comfortable working collaboratively in a growing and complex acquisitive environment with over 4,000 Team Members throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.
Responsibilities / Job Duties:
Provide practical and strategic legal advice and engage in collaborative problem-solving on issues ranging from recruiting and hiring, wage and hour compliance, workplace conduct, leaves and accommodations, discrimination and harassment, internal investigations, disciplinary actions, separations, agreements, immigration, employment related aspects of mergers and acquisitions, diversity and inclusion, workplace privacy, employee relations, and general employment risk management.
Provide legal advice and recommendations with respect to all areas of labor law, including knowledge and ability to handle labor matters, union organizing activities and related strategy, bargaining strategy and proposals, grievances, and unfair labor practices issues.
Participate in and provide leadership on efforts to prepare, implement and refine best practices, policies, guidelines, tools, programs and forms.
Lead and efficiently manage all employment claims, including internal handling of administrative agency investigations/charges where appropriate.
Analyze, develop and deliver strategic litigation and dispute resolution strategies in line with business requirements to reduce risks.
Monitor relevant legal developments and trends and, as a result, proactively shape the company’s approach.
Participate with Legal and the People Group to on develop strategy and methodologies for process improvement that supports continued company growth.
Create materials and conduct training and education for the People Group and management on employment law and compliance related matters.
Efficiently manage outside counsel with an eye toward minimizing outside counsel expenses and meeting budget.
Provide substantive support for the rest of the Legal team as needed.
Education/Experience:
JD from a nationally recognized law school and maintain active bar membership in at least one US state.
8+ years employment law experience including as in-house counsel, ideally for a company with a multi-state US presence and experience with Mexico and Canada employment law.
Strong knowledge of state and federal compliance, including FLSA, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, Title VII, and WARN.
Knowledge/Skills Required:
Strong business acumen, excellent communication skills and the ability to engage across all levels of the company with a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving.
Self-starter with a sense of urgency, ability to prioritize, handle unanticipated situations effectively and work well under pressure in a dynamic and demanding environment.
Comfortable acting as project manager where appropriate.
Proactive team player who partners effectively with the People Group with varying work styles in a collaborative environment to achieve stated business objectives while minimizing risks.
